Printer Operations
New Forms
Printouts from the AS/400 go to a printer through an output queue. When a printout starts up it checks to see if the new printout uses the same forms type as the was last used on the printer. If it is different, message CPA3394, beginning 'Load form type ...', is sent to the operator responsible for the printer. The message waits for one of several responses. Normally the operator will change the forms on the printer then respond "G" to tell the AS/400 to go ahead because the new forms type is now in the printer. Some times it is not important what forms a report is printed on. In this case respond "I" to ignore the forms change and print on whatever paper is in the printer at the moment.
Other options include:
C Cancel printing by stopping the printer and putting the printout at the end of the user's spool file.
B Begin printing like G, except automatic new forms alignment is omitted.
H Hold the printout and continue with the next one.
R Restart printing at the next printout of the current form type.
Aligning Forms
Some printouts belong on special forms that require careful positioning on some printers, like cheque forms. After sending the first line to the printer, message CPA4002, beginning 'Verify alignment ...', is sent to the operator responsible for the printer. The message waits for one of several responses. If the first line is positioned correctly, respond "I" to tell the AS/400 that the forms are in line and normal printing can begin.
Other options include:
C Cancel printing by stopping the printer and putting the printout at the end of the user's spool file.
G The AS/400 advances to a new form and prints the first line again. You can adjust the paper alignment before responding.
N Manually advance the paper to a new form and adjust the paper alignment before responding.
R Reprints the first line without advancing to a new form. You can adjust the paper alignment before responding.
E Ejects, or advances, to a new form and prints the first line again. You can adjust the paper alignment before responding.
Notes
Any user with suitable authority can intervene and do printer operator functions from any workstation.
Changing your Default Printer
Printouts get to printers in many ways in the AS/400 environment where the AERIS/400 applications operate. When you are set up as a user on the AS/400 you are assigned both a default printer and a default output queue to be used to direct printouts. These defaults apply to any printout that is not specifically defined as going elsewhere. These defaults for printing become the defaults for each workstation session, or Client Access window, when it starts up. The defaults for each session can be changed independently from then on.
In the AERIS environment you can change the default printer for a session from any AERIS menu. To change the defaults for printing do the following:
- Go to an AERIS menu.
- Select option 91, Display your active jobs. You will see a list of all the Client Access sessions that you have open at the moment.
- Enter 2, Change, in front of the session that you want to change and press Enter.
- Change the Output Queue name, and Library if necessary, to that of the printer that you want printouts to be printed on immediately. Oddly, this takes precedence over the Print Device. Then press Enter.
From now on printouts for this session will go to the new default printer unless they were defined as going to a specific printer, or you change the default printer for a specific job submission. This will hold until either you change the default again or you sign off of the session.
